ROUND TABLE: ORIENTAL MOTIFS IN GOETHE’S WORK

S. Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University held a round table on the theme ‘East in Goethe’s works’, dedicated to the German poet, thinker and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The aim of the event was to discuss the influence of Eastern culture on Goethe’s works, to analyse Eastern motifs in his works and their significance.

The moderator was Larisa Demchenko, Associate Professor of Kazakh, Russian Philology and Journalism Department, Candidate of Physical Sciences. The participants of the round table were students of the Department of Kazakh, Russian Philology and Journalism, the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation, who read poems of the author in Russian, Kazakh and German languages.

The staff of the regional library named after A. S. Pushkin performed with a creative approach. A. S. Pushkin Regional Library, presenting a modern understanding of Goethe through the form of Instagram-posts. This allowed participants to look at the works of the German poet from a modern perspective, in which the classics and the digital age are intertwined.

In September this year, the alma mater won a grant to hold events from the Goethe Institute in Almaty, which became possible thanks to the support of the German Cultural Institute and the desire to popularise Goethe’s legacy among Kazakhstan’s and the world’s audience.
