FIFTH BATCH OF STUDENTS AT AMANZHOLOV UNIVERSITY HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE INTERNATIONAL ONLINE COURSE ON NELSON MANDELA RULES
The fifth cohort of students from the “Jurisprudence” program at Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University successfully completed an online course dedicated to the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (the Nelson Mandela Rules).
The course was developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and provided participants with the opportunity to study in depth the international principles and standards for the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty, in both Kazakh and Russian languages.
The training was conducted as part of the “Penal Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan” course under the guidance of Doctor of Law Kuat Rakhimberdin. The lecturer emphasized that knowledge and application of the Nelson Mandela Rules are a crucial element of professional training for future lawyers, as these rules form the foundation of modern approaches to the management of penitentiary institutions, the protection of human rights, and the prevention of ill-treatment.
During the course, students studied internationally recognized standards for the humane treatment of prisoners; principles aimed at rehabilitation and social reintegration of convicts; key norms of international law related to the work of penal authorities; and practical cases and scenarios closely aligned with real-life situations.
An important advantage was that the training was conducted in both Kazakh and Russian, which enhanced accessibility and the depth of understanding of the material.
All 50 students successfully completed the course and received international certificates from UNODC, confirming their competencies and readiness to apply best global practices in the field of criminal justice.
During the training, students used Kuat Rakhimberdin’s monograph, “The Role of Implementing the Nelson Mandela Rules in Addressing Gaps and Conflicts in the Penal Legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” which allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the application of international standards in national practice.
Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University continues to strengthen its position as a leading scientific and educational center in the field of criminal and penal policy in Kazakhstan by implementing innovative approaches and collaborating with international organizations.
