Within the framework of the International Year of Volunteers, on February 19, a debate tournament in the British Parliamentary format was held at Library Branch No. 2 of the O. Bokey Regional Central Library (municipal institution of the Akimat of Ust-Kamenogorsk). The event was organized by the “Zhasyl Ui” Environmental Center.

Second-year students of the Department of Ecology and Geography from the educational programs 6B05202 – “Ecology” and 6B05203 – “Hydroecology, Management and Transboundary Water Security” actively participated in the event. Among the participants were Yergazy S., Kydyrmenova S., Sovetova Z., Kazhenova N., Kazbekova M., and Aidarov Zh.

The main goal of the tournament was to develop critical thinking among young people, increase civic engagement, and promote a culture of volunteerism. The debates were conducted in the British Parliamentary format, where four teams defended their positions: Opening Government, Opening Opposition, Closing Government, and Closing Opposition.

During the discussions, participants examined the role of the volunteer movement in society, its significance in implementing environmental initiatives, and the social responsibility of youth. The teams presented well-structured arguments, provided reasoned responses to their opponents, and demonstrated a high level of preparation while adhering to the speaking regulations.

The jury evaluated the teams based on the following criteria: quality of content, depth of argumentation, logical structure of the speech, compliance with time regulations, and communication culture.

Following the tournament, the winners were awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree diplomas.

Such intellectual platforms represent an important step in fostering an active, responsible, and socially conscious generation. The active participation of young people in public initiatives is a key factor in ensuring the country’s sustainable future.
