Department of mathematics
The Department of Mathematics was founded simultaneously with the opening of the Ust-Kamenogorsk Pedagogical Institute in 1952. Since the establishment of the department, it has been headed by leading scientists. The heads were: Rector of UKPI Ermolaev L.A., Efremov E.P., Professor Teut O.M., associate Professor Belogrivov I.I., Associate professor Kriulko S.A., Associate Professor Melentyev A.I., Professor Bazarbekov A.B., Associate Professor Mukhamediev G.H., Professor Hisamiev N.G., Professor Zakiryanov K.K., Associate Professor Chistyakova I.V., associate professor Dyusembayeva G.S., associate professor Krykpaeva A.A.
In 2009, as the head of the Department of Mathematics was elected the Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor M.N. Madiyarov.
In 2011, the Department was merged with the Department of Computer Science and has been known as the «Department of Mathematics and Computer Science», whose head was the Candidate of Technical Sciences, M.N. Madiyarov.
In December 2017, as the head of the Department of Mathematics was elected the Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Yergaliev E.K.
Since September 2022, the head of the Department of Mathematics had been Ph.D., E.A. Malgazdarov.
Since September 2023, on a competitive basis, the Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Yergaliev E.K. has been elected.
The Department carries out international cooperation and is actively engaged in the development of external and internal academic mobility. Since 2017, a master’s degree program has been opened in a joint educational program with Altai State University (Barnaul).
Teachers of the department receive a large number of certificates every year for participation in seminars, round tables, diplomas, letters of thanks from educational organizations.
All graduates are employed, are in high demand in the labor market, are successfully advancing in their careers and are mobile, many have defended their PhD theses, continue their studies in the master’s degree, PhD. Foreign students who studied at the department successfully work abroad. The department maintains close contact with graduates.

The teaching staff of the Department of Mathematics takes part in the annual competition “The Best University Professor” held by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Associate professor of the department Baygereev Dosan Rakimgalievich is the holder of the title “The Best University Professor – 2021”, senior lecturer of the department Alimbekova Nurlana Baurzhanovna is the holder of the title “The Best University Professor – 2022”. The competition evaluates such indicators as the development and publication of electronic educational resources, educational materials, scientific publications in domestic and international journals, the availability of patents for inventions, etc. The quality of the applicant’s teaching, his work on training in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies is also evaluated.
Every year, teachers of the department publish up to 50 articles in collections of scientific and practical conferences together with students and undergraduates, are published in leading scientific domestic and foreign publications, there are articles with an impact factor. In 2021-2023, 11 articles were published in journals included in the first, second and third quartiles of JCR according to the Web of Science database and/or having a percentile of at least 50 according to the Scopus database; 5 copyright certificates for computer programs were obtained.
The department carries out constant cooperation with schools of the city and the region, annually holds the regional Olympiad in mathematics, participates as a jury in various Olympiads, project competitions, holds round tables with teachers of schools of the city and the region, participates in rating events.
Teachers of the department have awards and letters of thanks of various levels in the field of education.
The bachelor’s degree program “B009 – Mathematics” of the Department of Mathematics took the second place in the Ranking of educational programs of universities for 2020, which is conducted by NCE “Atameken”. The educational program of the master’s degree “M092 – Mathematics and Statistics” of the Department of Mathematics took the first place in the republic in the NAAR rating of 2021.
Educational work is based on the implementation of the Concept of education of the younger generation in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the plan of educational activities recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the development plan of the S. Amanzholov EKU. Based on these documents, there is a plan of educational work of the department.
Students of the department take an active part in all activities of the university and Higher School. This is evidenced by certificates and letters of thanks. There are documents on educational work: a work plan for the implementation of a Comprehensive education program, diaries of curators, regulations on the adviser of the EKU at Sarsen Amanzholova and work plans, reports, minutes of curatorial hours. Academic calendars have been developed for each group of students.
Students of the Department of Mathematics take part and are winners in subject Olympiads and university, republican competitions of scientific research. For example, in 2021, Aset Almas, a student of the educational program 5B010900 – Mathematics, won the 1st place of the regional IT hackathon “Jastar Time” as part of the implementation of the state program “Digital Kazakhstan”.

The department works in the following scientific areas:
1) Parallel finite element methods for solving computational fluid dynamics problems.
The main attention is focused on the development and theoretical study of finite element methods for solving initial boundary value problems for multiphase filtration equations, Navier-Stokes equations, Stokes-Darcy equations. The relevance of this scientific direction is due to its important economic and applied significance in forecasting various processes in the oil industry, hydrology, meteorology, biomedicine, carbon sequestration, and nuclear waste management. Within the framework of this direction, the teaching staff of the department offers effective finite element methods for solving these problems, conducts a theoretical analysis of the stability and convergence of methods, develops parallel algorithms for their implementation.
2) Numerical solution of differential equations with fractional derivatives.
Within the framework of this direction, the teaching staff of the department studies numerical methods for implementing fractional differential generalizations of classical models of computational fluid dynamics. These problems belong to the class of non-classical problems of mathematical physics, and are of great applied importance in modeling physical processes in highly porous fractured and other heterogeneous media. The main attention is focused on obtaining high-order computational schemes, their theoretical research and the development of parallel algorithms for their implementation.
3) Mathematical modeling in ecology and creation of new information systems.
Safe management of natural processes, especially taking into account technogenic factors, is impossible without predicting situations, which makes it necessary to use mathematical methods and models. The advantages of mathematical models are that they allow you to make predictions that can be compared with real data by setting up an experiment or making the necessary observations. However, it must be remembered that any mathematical model takes into account only some aspects of reality, but not all. Therefore, an important step in the construction of the model is to check its adequacy, comparing the simulation results with empirical data.
4) Quality issues of training competitive specialists.
A modern specialist is required to have professional competence and the ability to make decisions in non-standard situations, the ability to work in a team, independently extract, analyze and effectively use information, work rationally in a rapidly changing world. These qualities are acquired by students studying under the conditions of using active forms, working in pairs, groups, solving specific life situations. At the same time, great priority is given to independent work.
