AMANZHOLOV UNIVERSITY PRESENTED ITS INITIATIVES AT CDIO ASIAN REGIONAL MEETING 2026
Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University took part in the CDIO Asian Regional Meeting 2026, an international event dedicated to the development of engineering education and the training of a new generation of engineers. The event is being held from September 23 to 26 with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and is taking place in Central Asia for the first time.
More than 50 representatives of universities, educational organizations, the expert community, and industry from 15 countries are participating in the regional meeting. The discussions focus on cooperation between academia, industry, and artificial intelligence, the development of project-based learning, practice-oriented training, and the integration of modern digital tools into engineering education.
As part of the professional programme, The Chairman of the Board – Rector Gulzhan Jarassova delivered a presentation entitled “The Future of Engineering Education in Kazakhstan: Academia, Industry and Artificial Intelligence for the Next Generation of Engineers.”
In her presentation, the Rector introduced an approach to the development of engineering education based on a combination of fundamental training, project activities, cooperation with industry, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Particular attention was paid to the role of regional universities in addressing challenges related to economic development and strengthening the scientific and technological potential of the region.
“A university can connect fundamental research and digital competencies with the needs of the local economy. This requires interdisciplinary teams, accessible research infrastructure, and continuous dialogue with industry,” noted Gulzhan Jarassova.
Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University is already implementing projects that demonstrate the practical application of artificial intelligence. At the Laboratory of Digital Technologies and Modeling, researchers are studying opportunities for predicting flood risks and soil moisture using big data, satellite imagery, and artificial intelligence methods.
Student projects represent another important area of development. Students of the Information Systems educational program developed a project for the automatic early diagnosis of lung diseases based on the YOLOv8 deep learning model.
Practice-oriented training is also supported through the University’s cooperation with leading enterprises and research organizations in the region. In developing and updating educational programs, the University works with Kazzinc, Ulba Metallurgical Plant, KAZ Minerals, the National Nuclear Center, VNIITsvetmet, and other partners.
The CDIO Asian Regional Meeting 2026 continues the professional dialogue on the transformation of engineering education and the development of competencies required by modern industry. Participation of Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University in the international meeting provides an opportunity to present its experience in engineering education, research, and the application of digital technologies, as well as to expand professional cooperation with international universities and industry representatives.
