As part of the implementation of the targeted research project AP26199899 “Regional Integration of Literary and Linguistic Tourism in East Kazakhstan: Etymology of Toponyms and Digitalization of Local Legends,” approved by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aizhan Maratbekovna Kartayeva, Doctor of Philological Sciences and Professor at the Department of Kazakh and Russian Philology and Journalism of Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University, and Senior Lecturer Zhazira Kuatbekovna Kaiyrbayeva completed a research internship at the Department of Altaic Studies of the University of Szeged in Hungary.

The main purpose of the research internship was to study the academic experience of the University of Szeged in the fields of Altaic studies, Turkology, linguistics, and literary studies, as well as to master modern methods of collecting, classifying, and conducting etymological analysis of toponymic material. Particular attention was paid to academic cooperation with scholars from the Department of Altaic Studies, the development of joint research initiatives, the preparation of scientific articles and publications, and the further strengthening of international cooperation between Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University and the University of Szeged.

During work with the academic collections and specialized literature of the Department of Altaic Studies at the University of Szeged, additional sources and comparative materials were identified that make it possible to clarify the origins of a number of geographical names in East Kazakhstan in Turkic and Altaic languages. The materials obtained expand the source base of the ongoing research and can be used in further etymological analysis of regional toponyms.

An important outcome of the internship was the study of international experience in creating and maintaining databases of toponymic legends. Based on the materials obtained, possible structural and technological solutions for creating the project’s digital platform were considered, including data storage formats and classification systems.

The information and methodological experience gained during the research internship will be used in the preparation of the scientific report for project AP26199899, as well as in further scientific publications and research devoted to the toponymy, etymology, and literary and linguistic tourism of East Kazakhstan.

The research internship became an important stage in the development of international academic cooperation between Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University and the University of Szeged. It contributed to the expansion of academic contacts and the exchange of experience in Altaic studies, Turkology, linguistics, and literary studies.
