100 STUDENTS – 250 SEEDLINGS IN THE PANCRATIEV GARDEN

A large-scale landscaping of the Pankratiev garden took place in the regional centre. More than 100 students and teachers of S. Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University  realised the planting of 100 currant bushes ‘In Memory of Shukshin’, 100 blackberry and raspberry bushes, as well as 60 ordinary spruce trees.

For the revival and prosperity of the cultural-historical and ecologically significant object, the rector of S. Amanzholov EKU Mukhtar Tolegen organised a green action. The head of the region Yermek Kosherbayev also took part in the event.

-We do everything to make our city comfortable and attractive for living. It is landscaping and gardening that plays an important role in this. Therefore, any initiative on the part of state, private organisations and citizens is especially praiseworthy. So everyone contributes to the prosperity of the small motherland, – said the akim of East Kazakhstan region.

-Pankratiev Garden is the centre of educational and field practice for our students. Effective practical training by biologists is held here every year. For VCU, taking care of the garden is a great responsibility, and we try our best to maintain proper order here, – said the first head of EKU Mukhtar Tolegen.

Raspberry bushes, blackberries and currants ‘In Memory of Shukshin’ were planted on the 15-decade territory. According to teachers of the Department of Biology of EKU, such a variety is characterised by large fruitfulness, rapid fruitfulness and high yield.

In addition, in a few tens of years in the garden will rise ‘matured’ spruce trees. These conifers are good for soil regeneration and prevent erosion, as well as improving air quality.

Students of the university actively participated in the noble endeavour. According to them, the fragile and immature sprouts are the embodiment of the youth of Kazakhstan.

-Now we are also just preparing the ground for our bright future. We are immersing ourselves in knowledge, new experience and trying to get stronger, to grow into big people. I think planting plants is a way for us to express ourselves and do a good deed for our city,’ said Bagym Baltabayeva, a student of EKU.

Foreign citizens – professors of Turkish, Korean, Tajik and Hungarian universities-partners of EKU – were also enthusiastic about the green action. In memory of this day Turkish language teacher Sadullah Duman presented Ermek Kosherbaev with a book on language research of Kazakh poet Utebai Turmanzhanov’s works in Turkish translation, and students presented a basket of large garden apples.

The eco-event ended with chanting, poetry performances by talented young people, sports competitions and hot pilaf cooking. Meanwhile, young plants with the name ribbon of Amanzholov Univetsity were being planted in the background.

Let us remind you that Pankratiev Garden is a historical monument of Ust-Kamenogorsk, which bears the name of professional gardener Dmitry Gordeevich Pankratiev. In the twentieth century he created a garden, broke up a park, carried out landscaping of the settlement of hydro-builders and laid a greenhouse farm, which during the Great Patriotic War supplied the population with seedlings and vegetables.

The garden was famous for its extensive plantations of raspberries, currants, fruit trees and shrubs, as well as rare red herbs.
