50 STUDENTS RECEIVED UN INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATES IN HUMANE TREATMENT OF PRISONERS
A new stream of students from the “Jurisprudence” educational program of S. Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University successfully completed an online course on the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Nelson Mandela Rules). The course, developed by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, provided participants with in-depth knowledge of the principles and standards governing the treatment of prisoners at the global level.
The training took place as part of the study of the academic discipline “Criminal and Correctional Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan”. The lecturer of the course, Doctor of Law Kuat Rakhimberdin emphasized the importance of understanding and applying the Nelson Mandela Rules for future lawyers. These rules are universally recognized standards for prison management and treatment of prisoners, aimed at respecting human rights, preventing ill-treatment and ensuring decent treatment of prisoners.
During the course, students learned the Standard Minimum Rules for the humane treatment of prisoners, principles that promote the rehabilitation and social reintegration of convicted prisoners, and the importance of complying with international criminal justice norms.
The course included interactive learning materials, practical cases and scenarios. This contributed to the development of analytical and problem-solving skills related to the management of prisoners and the protection of their rights. Students had the opportunity to complete the online course in Kazakh and Russian.
Upon completion of the course, all 50 students received international certificates from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. This demonstrates the high level of their training and readiness to implement best international practices in the field of criminal justice. Sarsen Amanzholov became the center of scientific research on the problems of criminal and penal policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Let’s remind, this year Doctor of Law Kuat Khazhumukhanovich published a monograph “The role of implementation of the Nelson Mandela Rules in the mechanism of overcoming gaps and conflicts of the penal legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
