AMANZHOLOV UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES “PLASTIC-FREE DAY” ECO CHALLENGE

The Department of Ecology and Geography of the Higher School of IT and Natural Sciences at Sarsen Amanzholov East Kazakhstan University has launched the environmental campaign “Ecology Begins with Each of Us” as part of the Taza Qazaqstan program. The first initiative was the “Plastic-Free Day” challenge, which brought students together around the idea of caring for the environment.

The main goal of the initiative is to develop environmental awareness among young people, increase understanding of the negative impact of single-use plastic on nature, and encourage responsible everyday habits.

As part of the challenge, students gave up plastic bottles and plastic bags for one day and replaced them with more environmentally friendly alternatives. Instead of disposable bottles, they used reusable water containers, while plastic bags were replaced with reusable shopping bags.

The accumulation of plastic waste is becoming an increasingly serious environmental issue. Because plastic takes a long time to decompose, it pollutes soil and water bodies, disrupts natural ecosystems, and poses a threat to living organisms. Reducing the use of single-use plastic, sorting waste, and reusing items are therefore important steps toward a more environmentally responsible lifestyle.

The “Plastic-Free Day” challenge encouraged students to reconsider their everyday habits and demonstrated that caring for nature begins with simple choices. Such initiatives not only improve environmental literacy among young people but also help promote a culture of conscious consumption within the University community.

Caring for nature is our shared responsibility, and it begins with the choices each of us makes every day.
